The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Injeel, the Zabur, or the Qur’an.”

Verse-by-Verse Tafseer of Surah Al-Fatiha
1. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
“In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.”
Tafseer:

Muslims begin every act with the name of Allah to seek His blessings.

Ar-Rahman refers to Allah’s universal mercy, given to all creation.

Ar-Rahim refers to Allah’s special mercy, reserved for believers.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Every important matter that does not begin with Bismillah is cut off (from blessing).”

2. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.”
Tafseer:

All praise, gratitude, and thanks belong to Allah alone.

Rabb means Creator, Sustainer, Provider, and the One who controls everything.

Al-‘Alameen refers to all worlds: humans, jinn, angels, animals, and everything Allah created.
Allah says:
“He is Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them.”

3. الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
“The Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.”
Tafseer:

Allah repeats His two great Names to emphasize His overwhelming mercy.

Scholars say this repetition teaches believers:

Allah’s mercy surrounds us in this world and the next.

Even His punishment is out of justice, not cruelty.

“Allah’s mercy is greater than a mother’s mercy for her child.”

4. مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
“Master of the Day of Judgment.”
Tafseer:

On the Day of Judgment, only Allah will have absolute authority.

No king, wealth, or power can benefit anyone except by Allah’s permission.

This verse reminds believers of accountability.
Allah says:
“To whom belongs the Dominion today? To Allah, the One, the Irresistible.”
(Qur’an 40:16)
5. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.”
Tafseer:
This is the central verse of the Surah.

It declares complete submission to Allah alone.

Worship includes: prayer, dua, trust, fear, hope, and obedience.

6. اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
“Guide us to the Straight Path.”
