Surah Al-Qadr (سورة القدر)

Surah Al-Qadr is the 97th chapter of the Quran, revealed in Makkah. It consists of 5 verses and highlights the significance of Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Decree or Power), a night better than a thousand months.

Transliteration:

Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm

1. ‘Innā ‘anzalnāhu fī laylati l-qadr

2. Wa mā adrāka mā laylatu l-qadr

3. Laylatu l-qadri khayrum min alfi shahr

4. Tanazzalul-malā’ikatu war-rūḥu fīhā bi’idhni rabbihim min kulli ‘amr

5. Salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭla’il-fajr

Translation (English):

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree.

2. And what will make you realize what the Night of Decree is?

3. The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

4. The angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) descend therein by the permission of their Lord for every matter.

5. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

Benefits of Surah Al-Qadr

1. A Night Better Than 1000 Months

• Laylatul Qadr is the most powerful night in Islam. Worship performed on this night is better than 83 years of worship.

2. Rewards for Recitation

• Reciting Surah Al-Qadr frequently brings forgiveness, blessings, and mercy from Allah.

• The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
  “Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

3. Protection from Hellfire

• Reciting this Surah regularly can help a person gain closeness to Allah and seek protection from Hellfire.

4. Angelic Presence and Peace

• The Surah describes that on Laylatul Qadr, angels descend peacefully, making it a night full of divine mercy and tranquility.

5. Accepted Duas (Supplications)

• The best dua to recite on Laylatul Qadr is:
  اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
  “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni”
  (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.) (Tirmidhi)

Surah Al-Qadr emphasizes the greatness of Laylatul Qadr, a night when the Qur’an was revealed, and worship is more valuable than 1000 months. The Surah encourages believers to seek Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and guidance through sincere worship and prayers, especially during the last ten nights of Ramadan.
