Prayer

Salatul Tasbih (صلاة التسبيح) is a special nafl (voluntary) prayer in Islam in which a particular tasbih (phrase of glorification) is recited many times during the prayer. This prayer is known as the Prayer of Forgiveness because it was taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to his uncle, Hazrat Abbas (RA), as a means by which Allah forgives many sins.

The Prophet ﷺ advised performing it daily if possible. If not, then every Friday, once a month, once a year, or at least once in a lifetime.

The Tasbih to Recite

In Salatul Tasbih, you use the following phrase for glorification:

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ وَلاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ اللّٰهُ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ
Subhaanallaahi walhamdu lillaahi wal-laa ilaaha illallaahu wallaahu akbar
(Glory be to Allah, and all praise is due to Allah, and there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.)

Structure of Salatul Tasbih

Salatul Tasbih consists of 4 rakats (units), the same as a normal prayer. However, in every posture and part of the prayer, this tasbih phrase is recited a specific number of times so that the total adds up to 300 tasbihs, 75 in each rakat.

Step-by-Step Guide (Per Rakat)

For each of the four rakats:

1️⃣ Before Any Recitation (After Opening Takbir & Sana)

  • After saying Allahu Akbar to start the prayer and reciting Subhanaka (Sana), recite the tasbih 15 times.

2️⃣ After Surah Al-Fatiha & Another Surah

  • Then recite Surah Al-Fatiha and any other short Surah of the Qur’an.

  • After this, recite the tasbih 10 times.

3️⃣ In Ruku (Bowing)

  • After the normal ruku glorification (Subhaana Rabbiyal Azeem), recite the tasbih 10 times.

4️⃣ After Rising from Ruku (Standing Again)

  • Recite the tasbih 10 times.

5️⃣ In the First Sajdah (Prostration)

  • After the regular sajdah glorification (Subhaana Rabbiyal A‘la), recite the tasbih 10 times.

6️⃣ Sitting Between the Two Sajdahs (Jalsa)

  • While sitting, recite the tasbih 10 times.

7️⃣ Second Sajdah

  • After the usual sajdah glorification, recite the tasbih 10 times.

This completes one rakat with 75 tasbihs. Repeat the same for all four rakats to reach 300 tasbihs in total.

Finishing the Prayer

  • After the last (fourth) rakat, you sit for Tashahhud, recite the usual Attahiyat, Salawat, and Dua, and then conclude Salatul Tasbih with Taslim (saying Assalamu Alaikum) to both sides.

When to Perform It

  • You may offer Salatul Tasbih any time of day or night except during the known forbidden times for prayer (e.g., sunrise, sunset).

  • Prophetic guidance suggests performing it every day if possible, or as frequently as you can manage.

Important Notes

  • Do not count out loud during the prayer-it should be done silently in your heart and mind.

  • Avoid using a bead tasbih (rosary) or loudly counting fingers-this can break the concentration and etiquette of Salah.

  • If you miss a count by accident in one posture, make up the remaining tasbihs in the next posture.

Spiritual Importance

The virtue of Salatul Tasbih lies in its abundant remembrance of Allah and the forgiveness it brings. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it as a way for a believer to seek Allah’s mercy and cleanse their sins.
