Choosing a name for your daughter
Many parents choose the name of a woman honored in the Quran or in early Islam, such as Maryam, Asiya, Khadijah, Aisha or Fatimah, so that the child grows up with a role model to learn from. Others look for a name whose meaning carries a hope for her, such as mercy, light, patience or faith.
Scholars advise avoiding names with a bad meaning and names that claim a quality belonging only to Allah. Names that begin with “Amat” (maidservant of) should be followed by one of Allah’s names, such as Amatullah. Spellings vary between languages, so check the meaning with someone you trust before you decide.
