How Islamic inheritance (faraid) works

What is faraid?

Faraid is the Islamic law of inheritance. It is based on the Quran, mainly Surah An-Nisa 4:11, 4:12 and 4:176, and gives fixed shares of an estate to specific heirs.

What is paid before the estate is divided?

Funeral expenses and debts are paid first. A bequest (wasiyyah) to non-heirs may then be paid, up to one-third of the remaining estate. The rest is divided among the heirs.

How much does a wife or husband inherit?

A wife receives 1/4 if the deceased left no children, or 1/8 if there are children, shared equally between wives. A husband receives 1/2 with no children, or 1/4 with children.

Do sons and daughters receive equal shares?

When sons and daughters inherit together, each son receives twice the share of each daughter.

What are ʿawl and radd?

ʿAwl reduces every share in proportion when the fixed shares add up to more than the whole estate. Radd returns any surplus to the fixed-share heirs when there is no residuary heir.

Is this calculator accurate for every family?

It covers the most common cases: spouse, parents, children and full siblings, under Sunni rules. Cases involving grandchildren, grandparents or half-siblings need a qualified scholar.

This tool follows the widely agreed Sunni rules for the heirs listed above, including ʿawl (proportional reduction) and radd (return of the surplus). It does not cover grandchildren, grandparents, half-siblings, nieces, nephews, uncles or other relatives, and Shia law differs. It is for learning, so please confirm any real case with a qualified scholar or Islamic-law solicitor.
