Wudu, an act of attaining physical purification before starting prayer or before standing in front of Almighty Allah. Body parts including hands, face, arms and feet are washed in a Sunnah way. Fresh and pure water is compulsory to perform Wudu.
How many are the Fardh acts of Wudu?
There are four Fardh acts of Wudu that are given below:
- Washing hands
- Washing face
- Moving wet hands on head and nech (Masah of the head)
- Washing both the feet
There are five prayers in a day that are compulsory to perform. These are listed here:
- Fajr
- Zuhr
- Asr
- Maghrib
- Isha
Wudu is compulsory to perform before carrying out these obligatory prayers. One also needs to perform Wudu before touching or reciting Book of Allah (Holy Quran).
Why Wudu is compulsory to perform before offering prayer?
Wudu is compulsory to perform before prayer as a Muslim presents himself in front of Allah in prayer and it is not suitable to stand in front of Allah without purification. Wudu is the name of physical purification. A Muslim must have pure intentions while performing this sacred task. Before you present yourself in front of Almighty Allah, make sure that you are physically pure as a person enjoys the blessings in the state of ablution or Wudu.
Who is required to perform Wudu?
Wudu should be performed by all those who are going to perform Prayer, recite Holy Quran or any other Nawafil prayers. These worships cannot be performed without Wudu as it is the first and basic criteria to perform worships.
When should Wudu be performed?
Wudu should be performed if you are not in the state of purification for prayer. If you feel confused whether you are in the state of Wudu or not, perform it to confirm the state of purification.
How to perform Wudu? Step by step guide:
As we have discussed earlier that there are four Fardh acts of Wudu. Prophet Muhammad taught us the complete way to perform it. Muslims have been ordered to perform Wudu in the same way as Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) taught and recommended. It is called as the Sunnah way to perform Wudu. Here we will help you know the complete Sunnah way to perform it.
1- Making intentions to perform Wudu:
Wudu should be performed by intending to achieve purification for performing important rituals like prayer or Nawafil. Pure intentions help you achieve the purpose of performing it.
2- Find pure water from the pure resources:
The other step is to find the pure water from the pure resources. You can use water from following resources to perform this sacred act.
- Water obtained from well
- Water from melting ice
- Water of rivers, sea and canals
- Rain water
- Water in a pond
These are all the resources from where pure water can be obtained.
3- Start rites of Wudu with the name of Allah:
After you have found the pure water for Wudu, start with the name of Allah. Recite tasmiyyah before starting the rites of Wudu.
4- Wash both the hands properly:
When you have recited Tasmiyyah, start washing both of your hands. Washing hands three times is the Sunnah act in Wudu. Move fingers of one hand into the fingers of another hand. Remove the impurities from your hands to perform Fardh rites of Wudu.
Here is also the strategy behind this Sunnah act that one can check the color of water whether it is pure or not.
5- Rinse the mouth three times:
Rinse the mouth three times or perform Gargling three times. Take water in your right hand and put it into your mouth. This Sunnah also holds a secret. It is checking the taste of water whether it is pure or not. It is performed earlier to the Fardh act to check the quality of water for performing Fardh acts properly.
6- Wash nose three times:
Wash nose three times to make confirm that water tastes good because after it comes the Fardh act of Wudu. Take water into your right hand and put it into your nose. This act is followed by washing of face.
7- Washing face:
It is the first Fardh of Wudu. All other Sunnah acts are to make sure you properly get prepared for the Fardh acts of Wudu to perform Namaz. Wash your face three times from lobe of one ear to the other ear and from forehead to the beard. Also take water in your hands to supply it to the roots of beard.
8- Washing arms:
Washing arms is the second Fardh act of Wudu. Arms should be washed three times properly to the elbows.
9- Masah of the head:
It is the third Fardh act of Wudu. Swipe wet hands on your head to the back side of neck. Also put fingers in ear to clean inside.
10- Wash both of your foot:
Wash both of your foot three times as it is the fourth Fardh act of Wudu. Put fingers of your left hand into the fingers of foot to make no impurity remains on the foot.
11- Keep the order correct:
Keep the order of acts correct otherwise your Wudu will not be considered. Make confirm you perform all the acts and do not miss any one of these acts.
12- Recite Dua after performing Wudu:
Recite Dua after performing Wudu by raising the finger of witness to the sky. Allah opens all the doors of Jannah for a person when he recites Dua after completing ablution. This Dua represents the oneness of Allah Almighty and Prophet Muhammad as the last Prophet of Allah.
What are the acts that nullify or break the state of Wudu?
Here is the list of acts that nullify the state of Wudu:
- Ejaculation
- Natural discharges
- Bleeding
- Urination
- Vomiting
- Deep sleep
- Laughing in the prayer does not only break your prayer but also breaks the state of Wudu.
- All those acts after which Ghusl becomes compulsory for a Muslim.
- Menstruation
- Sexual interaction
- Passing of gas or feces
- Touching the private parts or sexual parts with hands
These are all the acts that nullify the state of Wudu.
How many times a Muslim performs ablution in a day?
There are five prayers in a day. A Muslim is required to perform ablution five times but if the ablution of last prayer is not broken or nullified, you can offer two prayers with the same Wudu. Most of the Muslims also offer Nawafil prayers like Tahajjud and Namaz e Ishraq. In this way, they are also required to perform Wudu for these worships.
Is Wudu compulsory to make for reciting Holy Quran?
As Holy Quran is the book of Almighty Allah and contains the words of Allah for the guidance of whole humanity, it should not be recited without Wudu. One should not even touch this book if he is not in the state of Wudu. Respect of this holy book is the responsibility of whole Muslim Ummah.

Wudu is not only the preparation for offering prayers but is also a worship itself. It is the state when a person becomes close to Almighty Allah. All the worships are performed only when you are in the state of ablution and if not in the state of ablution, worships cannot be accepted.

- Wudu is a key to prayer:
Wudu is the preparation of prayer as without achieving the state of ablution, you cannot perform prayer. We have listened many times that Prayer is the key to Jannah but we should also know that Wudu in a proper way is the key to prayer.
- Wudu washes away the sins:
Wudu washes away the sins. When you wash your hands, sins start exiting from your hands, when you wash your face sins start exiting from face, when you wash your arms sins start exiting from your arms, when you perform Masah sins start exiting from head and when you wash your feet sins start exiting from your feet.
- Wudu is the prevention from health issues:
Ablution kills the germs present on your body and strengthens the immunity against germs. It is not a medicine but its benefits are related to the medicine. It cures different diseases and prevents wrinkles and lines on the faces. Gargling and rinsing the mouth several times in a day prevents tooth diseases.
- Wudu is the best state to enjoy the blessings of Allah:
Allah showers His continuous blessings upon those who remain in the state of Wudu. Whosoever sleeps in the state of Wudu, his sleep is also considered as the worship. State of Wudu also provides internal peace.
- Wudu is the part of faith:
As we have listened many times that cleanliness is the important part of faith, Wudu is also the state of cleanliness which is a part of faith.
